yes you're 100% correct, if you tell to an arab kan el kalili instead of Jan el Jalili, many of them will misundertand you, because kan in arabic is the verb "to be", some others who are a little bit smart will understand what you meant by looking at the phrase from a different angle, like if you tell you obrijada instead of obrigada, you may understand it and you mean not. So I think you got the meaning already.
