As for Eça de Queirós, I have a book of this author 'Cantos' (in PT) but haven't started reading yet.

Yes, I visited Algarve 1,5 year ago and I loved it. Actually, when u want to go to Portugal as a tourist, 90% of offers direct u to Algarve But I didn't stay there - I rented a car and travelled in different directions.

Lech Walesa is a Polish symbol, I agree. His is actually a hero connected with breaking Martial Law in Poland (the period after communism).
However, Jan Paweł II is much closer to Polish people's hearts...

até à próxima = 'do następnego', to translate it word by word, but 'na razie' is more common.
