Didn't Kant proove in the Kritik der reinen Vernunft that the question of God's existence has no answer, since both the opposite ones (yes/no) can be admitted? Then, he shows that His existence is made necessary by a moral law : we have to hope our soul could experiment happiness, if we have to act well.
Then we don't have to ask "Does God exist?", but "Why should He?". That is to say "Could we do without him?".
