Out in the real world, it's like the majority of people are most comfortable with others their own age. Maybe it's because they grew up with the same world events, the same prominant worldview, maybe it's because people close to thier age look more like them (ie, a 50 year old looks more like a 50 year old than a 13 year old), and people are naturally most drawn to those who seem to resemble them. I'd blame it on the educational system, too. Students are placed primarily among kids only their own age, and this is the extent of 'socialization.'
Judging by age becomes so common, it naturally carries over to the internet.
I absolutely detest that. I've had incredible conversations with 10 year olds, 30 year olds, 50 year olds, and 70 year olds. They all have different experiences and paradigms, they're all fascinating.
