Hi and welcome!
I'm still learning Esperanto too and I'm not able to help you totally but I'll try some explanations about the points I think I know, and I'm sure someone will pass by and correct everything if I'm wrong or complete my explanations anyway.
First of, I'd like to tell you about the best site (in my opinion) based on learning Esperanto:
lernu!: Main Page (english version). It's
Chiara410 who showed me that great site. She's the reference about Esperanto on this board ;-)
Talking about the X-convention for special signs, here's a link:
lernu!: Help Pages / About special characters
You had it correct by figuring out you just have to add "x" after the letter which is supposed to take the mark. The reason is pretty simple: there's no "X" in Esperanto, so scripts can be made to transcript every cx in the correct letter.
Concerning the words related to something: (Art and Artist), the rule is very similar to this example: Art = Arto, Artist = Artisto. So... "Arto" and "Art
isto". The "artisto" is someone who makes "arto". Same thing with verbs. Ex.: baki = to bake. (the final "i" means it's the infinitive form of a verb in Esperanto).... bak
isto = baker. And finally: Esperanto goes with Esperant
isto, you were correct.
I know I didn't solve the whole think, but I hope I helped you a little to learn some bases of this great language.
I highly recommend that you browse Lernu.net and you could start some classes in there. Personnaly, as a begginner (which I still am) I appreciate the Vojagxoj, very basic stuff and very interresting. Here's the direct link:

Once again, welcome aboard, I hope you'll get everything you want from this great language!
(Sorry for my English which could appear to be weird... ;-))
