My dear Giulie,
Portuguese from Portugal isn´t an " extraterrestrial" language

. If you understand Portuguese only from Brazil, I´m quite sure you´ll understand a native Portuguese from Portugal, at least the daily basic expressions used.
In fact, there are differences between both, like the "tu" used in Portugal and in Spain also and the "você" (you must = você deve) in Brazil, just like you said... but this matter isn´t so hard to understand so that you can´t get it. It´s just a matter of cultural identity.
It´s also true that "você" is used in Brazil but the conjugation of verbs is the same, in Portuguese from Portugal and in Portuguese from Brazil. Remember the origines of Portuguese spoken in Brazil...

Good luck!
